Web 2.0 Applications, Terms of Service, Student and Educator Safety

Schools are actively using the internet. They allow their students to surf the net and utilize a variety of Web 2.0 products.  Often teachers will read the websites terms of service, but not always.

2)  Not all Web 2.0 software is safe or appropriate for all students, so here are some basic questions that could be considered before using Web 2.0 applications.  Take a moment and answer these questions about your school.

a.  Does your school have an acceptable use policy in place that clearly informs students

and parents about it’s use of  Web 2.0 products?

b.  Does your school have both your parents and students sign your acceptable use policy?

c.  Do educators at your school examine each Web 2.0 application and their “Terms of Service” for student safety issues?

d.  Does your school have a vetting system in place for web 2.0 products?

e.  Does this Web 2.0 application’s owner or third party affiliates collect personal

information about your students?

f.  Does the web 2.0 application use advertisements in it’s product?

g.  Have you read the privacy policy for each Web 2.0 product that you use?

h.  The web 2.0 application is appropriate for which grades?

3)  Watch the Third Party Affiliate Video (Amateurish, but valid)  The video points out that often third party affiliates do not have terms of service on or for their websites.  More importantly, an individual might have a hard time determining the idenity of the third party affiliates.
