Use Anti-Virus Software and Other Basic Security Measures

Basic Security Measures for your protection.

Basic security measures are meant to allow adults who are not “technology geeks” to be able to still control their technological environment.

1)  Take a look at the list below and give 3 three examples of how you might use these ideas at home or school?

2)  Find two videos on YouTube or a similar application and post the links to these videos in this journal.

3)  Please provide at least one additional thought about internet security.

a.  Scan all e-mail attachments before opening.  Unscanned e-mail attachments can allow viruses, trojans, or worms to enter into your computer.  These malicious codes can cause a variety of things to happen to your computer.

b.  New malicious code is created daily, so update your computer’s anti-virus software weekly.

c.  Do not allow unfamiliar discs, USB sticks or other media transfer devices into your computer.

d.  Not all websites are safe and may try to download software onto your computer.  Anti-virus software is not always able to stop this download.  If this happens to you, immediately turn off your computer, disconnect your computer from the internet and seek advice from a technical professional.

e.  Do not leave your computer on or unattended, while you are logged in.  To help with this, you can set your display to log off your screen if left unattended for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or 20 minutes.  This works in XP, Vista, and 2007

f.  Do not write down your password on or near the computer.  It is too easy to find.

g.  Do not share your password with another.

h.  Change passwords every two to three months and use a complex password.

i.   Create a guest user account for when you have to share the computer.
