The thing most educators forget to do is read and ask specific questions about their school districts acceptable use policies. Every educator should have a solid understanding of their school’s “Acceptable Use Policy.” The reason you need to understand this document is that it was written to protect you, students, and the school districts! If a student or educator violates copyright, cyberbullies another student or educator, or visits inappropriate websites, what is the appropriate response according to your school?
1) Take a moment to watch this video on acceptable use from Mesquite Independent School District.
2) Find and upload the link to your school’s acceptable use policy in the comments section here (http://vtisp.org/resources/acceptable-use/), ask for help from your colleagues, if you need it.
3) Read your schools “Acceptable Use Policy.” How does your school’s AUP address the following questions? Please answer the following questions.
a. Cyberbullying is the “number 1″ problem for schools actively using technology. What is the procedure to address cyberbullling at your school?
b. What are your thoughts on students using cell phones or personal devices at school? What does your schools acceptable use policy say?
c. How does your schools AUP protect you and your students?
d. Who does a person talk to if they accidentally violate school acceptable use policies?
e. Now that you’ve read the “Acceptable Use Policy” of your school, what types of questions did you come up with for your administrators? How do these policies affect you as a educator?
4) Sometimes, even if you do everything right, strange things happen. Here is an incident in which an administrator acted upon a sexting issue and requested a picture emailed to his phone in an effort to collect evidence of sexting. Nobody could have predicted the outcome of this simple email. A procedure in place to protect the teachers might have mitigated the outcome of this event.

Write a response to the article. Could this have easily happened to you? Should there be a procedure at your school to address sexting issues. What are your suggestions for this procedure? Should this be addressed in your school’s acceptable use policy?
